Environmental Volunteering in Greece: Pick Up a Bag, Plant a Tree, Change a Place

One plastic bottle on a beach feels tiny, until a few hundred people pick up a few hundred of them in a single morning…

Volunteer Voices

A volunteer in the EVEC Volunteer Academy wrote this article. It shares the author's own views, not the official position of EVEC Athens, and we do not always agree with them. We publish it because we want young people's voices to be heard. We read every article before publishing it. Think something here is wrong or unfair? Tell us.

Environmental volunteering in Greece means giving some of your time to clean, plant or protect nature. You don’t need special training to start. Below are real ways to begin, whether you are 15, 20 or 40.

Teenagers (13-17): clean-ups and tree planting with an adult in charge

At your age, the best activities are daytime group events led by a teacher, scout leader or parent. Dangerous jobs such as firefighting are for trained adults only.

Beach clean-ups with HELMEPA. HELMEPA is the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association. Its website says that in its 1983 summer campaign, scouts and schoolchildren joined beach clean-ups in Greece for the first time. Today it coordinates International Coastal Clean-up Day and European Clean-Up Day. It invites ordinary people to clean a beach, riverbank, lake, forest or park. You wear gloves, fill bags and sort what can be recycled. Swimmers and sea animals get a safer shore. School reports show students from Athens College have also logged their litter in an app, which turns a clean-up into data about plastic pollution.

“Let’s Do It” Greece clean-ups. Let’s Do It is a movement that began in Estonia in 2008 and now runs clean-up days in many countries. According to the World Organization of the Scout Movement‘s sustainability site, scouts in Greece took part and helped clean more than 600 areas. You can join through a school team or local scout group. Neighbourhoods, paths and roadsides become cleaner and nicer to use.

Tree planting with We4all and The Hellenic Initiative. We4all is a Greek environmental group founded after the deadly 2018 fires near Athens. With the charity The Hellenic Initiative (THI), it runs planting days that accept volunteers of all ages. THI says more than 25,000 trees have been planted since 2022, and tools are provided. Come with a parent or teacher. Young trees on burnt hills help hold the soil in place.

You’ll learn teamwork, meet people who care about the same things, and have something real to put on a school activity list.

University student (18+): from city parks to turtle beaches

City park projects through the European Solidarity Corps. This EU programme is for ages 18-30, and it is important that the volunteering happens in person. One listed project, “Green Freaks,” is based in Athens’ Antonis Tritsis Park and other green spaces. Volunteers clean, plant trees, garden, and help run recycling workshops for school groups. The host organisation, KEAN, covers accommodation and travel. The city gets better-kept parks, and children learn habits that last.

A month on the beach in Lefkada. Another Solidarity Corps listing, “Clean Create & Educate,” sent a team of 20 volunteers to Lefkada island for a month to clean beaches and raise public awareness. New rounds appear on the portal, so check for current calls. Locals and tourists get cleaner beaches and a reminder to keep them that way.

Sea turtle protection with ARCHELON. ARCHELON is the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece. It accepts volunteers aged 18 and over. Volunteers are trained and supervised, and the usual minimum stay is four weeks. They watch nesting beaches, protect nests and hatchlings, and help injured turtles at its rescue centre. ARCHELON sometimes offers shorter options — check its volunteer page for current dates.

By joining these programmes you’ll gain fieldwork experience, new friends from other countries, and a strong line on your CV.

Adults: protect forests and plant their future

Volunteer forest firefighter teams. Greece relies on local volunteer teams alongside the fire service. A programme by Desmos, WWF Greece and HIGGS ran from 2022 to 2026. According to the Latsis Foundation, it equipped 2,888 volunteers from 71 teams and trained 1,240 volunteers and community representatives in fire prevention. You can look for a team near you or at a nearby organisation. The Civil Protection ministry also runs yearly training for volunteer groups, as reported by iefimerida. This work is only for adults who have completed official training and always operates inside an organised team. Villages gain a faster first response and better prevention.

Planting and caring for trees. We4all and THI also welcome adults. A November 2025 event on Pikilo Oros near Athens planned 1,000 native trees to reduce soil erosion in an area hit by the 2022 and 2024 fires. Guidance and materials were provided. Burnt land slowly turns green again.

Sea turtle work, at any adult age. ARCHELON says it welcomes volunteers of all ages, including those over 50.

Such volunteering will definitely benefit both you and the community. You can pick up practical safety skills, meet your neighbours, and set an example for the young people around you.

Why it matters

Litter harms animals, and fires and erosion damage homes and hillsides. Volunteers do more than tidy up. They give nature and their neighbours a head start. Every group above shows that ordinary people, working together for a few hours, leave a place visibly better.
